VEC is a Professional Development Program Partner with Engineers Australia, and support many of our Project Engineers and Project Managers through this program.

Current Positions
Project Manager (Queensland)

The position:

  • It is a full-time, Queensland based position, working in Brisbane with travel to all parts of Queensland including Central Queensland;
  • The successful candidate will be prepared to work away from Brisbane for specific project needs as required;
  • The successful applicant will be responsible for the planning, coordination and management of VEC civil infrastructure projects; and
  • Responsibilities will include driving the construction program while reporting on project progress and financial performance.

Essential Criteria:

  • Civil Engineering Degree;
  • 5 to 10 years professional industry experience and a practical approach;
  • Experience in managing small to medium size projects, and delivering them to the highest safety standards;
  • Excellent organisation, time management and leadership skills;
  • Excellent people skills;
  • Adept at managing client relationships;
  • Strong cost control techniques; and
  • The ability to work flexible hours and visit geographically diverse sites.

Desirable Attributes/Skills:

  • RPEQ accreditation highly regarded;
  • Experience within the disciplines of Rail, Civil and Structures;
  • QR experience preferable, other rail authority work would be advantageous;
  • A current Rail Industry Worker Card will be required (but can be obtained if not held;
  • An innovative, motivated ‘thinker’ with personal drive and commitment;
  • Tendering and estimating experience in the civil engineering industry;
  • Strong local knowledge of the industry; and
  • Knowledge of current project methodologies, including risk management, project evaluation, cost analysis and HSEQ.

Project Manager (Tasmania)

The successful applicant will be responsible for the effective planning, coordination and management of VEC Civil infrastructure projects, in accordance with set timeframes, cost, quality, safety and environmental objectives though all phases of the project. The position is full time, and candidates are expected to be based in North West Tasmania or Hobart.

Essential Criteria:

  • Relevant industry experience (7+ years’);
  • Experience in managing small to medium size projects, and delivering them to the highest safety standards;
  • Excellent organisation, time management and decision making skills;
  • Excellent people and leadership skills;
  • Adept at managing client relationships;
  • Strong cost control techniques; and
  • Willing to work flexible hours in diverse locations across Tasmania and potentially interstate.

Desirable Attributes/Skills:

  • Relevant Engineering Degree;
  • An innovative, motivated ‘thinker’ with personal drive and commitment;
  • Tendering and estimating experience in the civil engineering industry;
  • Demonstrated knowledge of PMBOK;
  • Sound knowledge of current project methodologies, including risk management, project evaluation, cost measurement and analysis; and
  • Contract Management experience.

Tender Coordinator

The successful applicant will be responsible for managing the tender process. Together with your colleagues, you will collate and prepare tenders and tender de-briefing meetings. This includes supporting the management team through Client Relationship Management (CRM) reporting. You may also be required to assist with preparing internal communication briefs. The position is full time and the role is based in Ulverstone or Hobart.

Essential Criteria:

  • Experience in a similar role involving tender coordination and reporting;
  • Experience in the compilation of Government tenders;
  • Strong written and oral communication skills;
  • Excellent organisational, leadership, time management and analytical skills;
  • Ability to plan work, set priorities and meet strict deadlines;
  • Commitment to the provision of quality customer service; and
  • A team player with personal drive and commitment, and the ability to drive the team.

Desirable Attributes/Skills:

  • Experience in technical writing;
  • Professional qualifications in relevant disciplines;
  • Experience in marketing communication, business development and customer service;
  • Creative skills with the ability to think strategically;
  • Experience in the Civil Construction industry would be advantageous;
  • Knowledge of the Microsoft Office and  Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign / Photoshop);
  • Experience in CRM software and reporting tools; and
  • Excellent people skills.

Under Graduate Engineers

With a number of projects and opportunities on the horizon, we are seeking Under Graduate graduate Engineers to join our dynamic team (a minimum of three positions are on offer). We are offering a 3 month, fixed term placement from November 2017 to February 2018. Preferably the candidate will be Hobart or Ulverstone based but must be willing to work state-wide. 

What we are looking for:

  • A 3rd year student working towards a Bachelor of Engineering qualification (preferably Civil but other majors will be duly considered);
  • Excellent written and communication skills, an effective communicator;
  • A strong work ethic and a great attitude;
  • Passion for the Civil Construction Industry and the desire to learn; and
  • Car licence and the ability to work flexible hours as required.

Advanced Civil Plant Operator (Grader)

VEC are seeking an experienced full-time grader operator to join our civil team. Candidates may be based in Ulverstone or Hobart but must be willing to work state-wide. The successful candidate will be engaged under the VEC Enterprise Agreement, and the appropriate classification level will be negotiated based on their experience.

Essential Criteria:

The successful applicant will have:
  • A minimum of 7 years’ experience in the operation of heavy equipment;
  • Plant operational certificates of competency (Grader as a minimum); and
  • Able to plan construction sequencing and organise tasks including managing other plant, equipment and personnel to successfully undertake pavement construction activities. 

Desirable Attributes/Skills:

  • Experience with GPS controlled plan in particular grader operations (Trimble or Topcon);
  • MR/HR truck licence and additional plant competencies including roller, excavator, front-end loader and backhoe; and
  • Traffic management qualifications.

Candidates must all pass a medical assessment prior to employment.

Information Technology Officer

We are interested to ascertain if there are experienced IT professionals looking for casual employment opportunities in Tasmania with an innovative Company.

The Essentials:

  • A minimum of 5 years’ experience within an Information Technology role;
  • Level four or higher certificate in computing/IT operations;
  • The ability to provide professional and customer focused desktop and systems support in a mixed platform environment with particular focus on PC hardware and software
    support; and
  • Comprehensive experience with windows desktop and server platforms and related technology.

Responsibilities shall include supporting the IT Manager by providing front-line Information Technology support, including troubleshooting and hardware and software maintenance for all VEC staff and business units.

Interview

Applicants shortlisted for interview are asked to respond to a number of set questions by a panel of two or three managers /or senior personnel. More than one interview may be required to complete this process.

Work History and Qualification Check

Qualifications and references will be checked for applicants being considered for any position.

Selection

Successful candidates will be advised of our intent to engage, subject to satisfactory screening.

Screening

National Police Check

Successful candidates may be required to participate in a national police check undertaken by an authorised organisation. This is dependent on the role and requirments of the position.

Medical Assessment

Successful candidates must satisfactorily complete a medical assessment (including drug and alcohol testing) undertaken by a VEC-approved pre-employment health assessment provider or medical practitioner.

There are no exceptions to these requirements.

Subject to meeting all the above criteria, successful applicants will be provided with a Letter of Offer and/or Terms and Conditions of Employment. A minimum three month probationary period applies to all appointments.

Work Experience

VEC provides opportunities for work experience for high school and tertiary students throughout our operations.
The experience provides students with the opportunity to develop personally and professionally in a diverse work environment. Areas include project management, engineering, office administration, carpentry, boilermaker/welding and general labouring.
