VEC were awarded the Design and Construct contract to complete the works on the Strahan Main Wharf in October 2016. Three options were provided to TasPorts in our tender submission. These were:
- Sheet Pile construction;Circular Hollow Section (CHS) driven piles and precast construction; orCombination of CHS driven piles, sheet piles and precast concrete.
- The works were programmed to be completed in three stages, allowing continued access and use of wharf sections that were not under construction at the time.
- Option 3 with sheet piles was preferred by TasPorts as it was a similar construction to the adjacent wharf and also offered the most cost efficient solution.
With the completion of stage 1, access was available to undertake more geotechnical investigation to help us understand the ground conditions for stage 2 and 3. From this, it became evident that the ground conditions varied greatly to that of stage 1. Therefore, option 2 including CHS driven piles and precast constructed crossheads was chosen to be the most effective solution.
