The Tasman Highway, Montagu Bay Interchange has been in place since the 1960’s and is now the busiest section of road in Tasmania. Complex merging arrangements were causing safety concerns and traffic congestion. This project was identified to address these concerns by constructing and modifying ramps within the existing interchange footprint. Completion has seen a reduction in congestion and movements through the interchange made much simpler and safer.

The Montagu Bay and Rosny Hill Interchanges are located on the eastern side of the Derwent River, within 1 kilometre of the Tasman Bridge. The Interchanges work together to link the Tasman Highway, the East Derwent Highway and Rosny Hill Road and are in close proximity to each other, separated by approximately 300 metres.

Generally, the Tasman Highway is a four-lane, dual carriageway road between the city of Hobart and its Airport. Additional lanes were provided between the Montagu Bay Interchange and the Rosny Hill Interchange resulting in three lanes in each direction. The close proximity of the two interchanges to each other created issues for merging and weaving traffic.

The Average Annual Daily Traffic in this location is 60,000 vehicles.
