Rail
VEC has a successful history in rail works – since 1997 the company has completed extensive work on the Tasmanian rail network.
Projects include the replacement of numerous rail bridges, a broad range of bridge and rail maintenance, tie replacement and rehabilitation. A number of rail projects have also been undertaken in Victoria.
Over many years the company’s commitment to supporting Tasmania’s rail system has been demonstrated through its ability and willingness to undertake projects both as an operator in its own right and as a subcontractor to Tasrail, Pacific National Tasmania and more recently, QR Limited.
VEC carries Rail Safety Accreditation (RSA) under the Rail Safety Act 1997 and meets the requirements of the following management systems –
• AS 4292:2006 Railway
Safety Management
• AS/NZS ISO 9001:2000 Quality Management
• AS 4801:2001 Occupational Health and Safety
• AS/NZS ISO 14001:2004 Environmental
VEC is closely aligned with the Rail Safety Unit (RSU) and the Rail Management Unit (RMU) and has invested heavily in essential plant and equipment to ensure its rail works are carried out with the greatest efficiency and to the highest standard.
Importantly, with its reputation for innovation and acknowledged record in bridge and road construction, VEC is ideally positioned to provide a complete service in rail maintenance and capital works.
In late 2008 VEC became a partnering subcontractor with QR Limited in a long-term contract for Stage 2 of the Rail & Sleeper Replacement Project, in a major upgrade of the rail system around Tasmania.
The contract covers sleeper layout, resleepering, resurfacing, rerailing, welding, ballast distribution, plus recovers and clean up.
