A history of serious crashes at this intersection prompted the Tasmanian Government’s Department of State Growth to award the the contract to VSJV to construct the upgrade, which opened to road users in July 2018.
The intersection of the Huon Highway and Summerleas Road, about 20 minutes south of Hobart, was the site of close to 50 serious crashes over a decade. Particularly dangerous was the right-hand turn from Summerleas Road, across the Huon Highway, towards Hobart.
The Huon Highway is a regional freight road connecting the Huon Valley region to Hobart and supports local traffic to the heavily populated suburb of Kingston.
The VSJV was engaged to construct a bridge for north-south traffic on the Huon Highway, including roadworks underneath, to allow vehicles, and pedestrians safe access across the Highway to Summerleas Road.
Using innovative solutions, the VSJV delivered a re-design of bridge abutments and piers, designed a reinforced earth wall (the first of its kind in Tasmania) and provided traffic management during the project.
The result, a safer solution for the travelling public in an area increasing traffic.
